City Break to the historic University City of Oxford, England
Oxford is one of Britain’s gems. It is a gorgeous city and is a complete contrast to modern London. It is an ideal location for a daytrip or a longer weekend city break. There are many hotels in Oxford to suit all accommodation needs and price brackets. Known as the ‘City of Dreaming Spires’, the Oxford has been home to royalty and University scholars for over 800 years. The University Colleges began as medieval halls of residence for students under the supervision of a master. Balliol and Merton are the oldest colleges dating from the 1200’s. Kellogg College is the newest Oxford College founded in 1990. There are a total of 39 colleges affiliated to Oxford University.

Getting to Oxford from London is relatively easy. The train only takes one hour from Paddington Station and are quite regular throughout the day. A slightly cheaper option is to take one of the hourly coaches that run from Victoria Coach Station. They take about 1 hour 40 minutes to get to Oxford, depending on the time of day and rush hour traffic, but they arrive in the centre of the city where as the train station is a 15 minute walk from the city centre.

The other option is you could drive there as the M40 motorway goes straight to Oxford from London’s M25 orbital motorway. The problem with driving is parking your car when you arrive. Most of the above surface car parking spaces are for only 2 hours. The underground car parks, if they are not full, are very expensive. Most costing over £10. Consider taking the park and Ride option. Park your car in the huge car parks outside of town and get the special bus into the city

Radcliffe Camera Oxford University - Oxford Weekend City Break Travel Guide

Oxford (along with Cambridge) is a beautiful ancient University city that is famous around the world less than 2 hours from London. If you start early you can see most of the sights in one day. It is an ideal location for a day trip from London. What you will notice is that the Oxford buildings are a different colour to the light grey Portland Limestone used to construct the grand buildings of London after the great fire of 1666. Oxford is in the Cotswolds. This is an area of outstanding natural beauty on a long stretch of sandstone that runs diagonally across England from Bristol to Peterborough. This warm yellow coloured sandstone was used by local crafts men as a building material. As a result all the grand buildings in Oxford are made of sandstone which gives the university, bridges and ecclesiastical buildings a distinctive look.

The main Oxford tourist sights are in the south east section of the city around the edges of a large green open space called Christ Church Meadow. They are all walk able. There is a city bus tour on a red double decker bus but it is expensive and not really necessary. Just buy a cheap city map that is available in most gift shops and from kiosks on walls all over the city.

Carfax Church Tower
This is a good place to start you visit to Oxford. You can climb 99 steps to the top of this tower in central Oxford to get a birds eye view of the city’s roof tops and spires. In 1818 St martins Church was rebuilt complete with a square Norman style castle church bell tower. At the end of the 19th century increased traffic problems lead to a decision to demolish the main body of the church building for road widening. On the east side of the church tower is a clock adorned with two ‘quarter boys’ that hit bells every 15 minutes. It is by the cross roads of St Aldates, Cornmarket Street, High Street and Queen’s Street. It is open April to September 10am to 5.30pm (October closes 4.30am)

Christ Church University College and Cathedral
On the map of Oxford you will see a wide road running north south called St Aldates. Walking south down this road from the Carfax Church tower on your left is the Oxford Town Hall and Museum of Oxford. For those interested in Modern Art take a quick detour up Pembroke Street which will be the first on your right. The Oxford museum of Morden Art is about 100 yards up the road.

Return back to St Aldates road and the magnificent imposing yellow sandstone building opposite Pembrook Street is the outer wall of Christ Church University College quadrangle. It is open to the public in the afternoon for an entrance fee. Carry on down the road to the end of the building. Take the left hand walled tarmac track that leads towards Christ Church University Cathedral. It leads to the large open green fields of Christ Church Meadow and the attractive views of the rear of the main university buildings at the north end and the river Thames to the south. A great place to take some photos.

Do not explore the tree lined meadow at this stage. You will find a path that doubles back to the main road, St Aldates, that goes through a small park. As you walk down this path have your camera ready for the great views of the old stone outer buildings in front of the Cathedral.

Turn left at the parks iron gates and keep walking past the police station until you find the old stone bridge of the river Thames. To your left is one of the most attractive pubs in Oxford. The River Head Public House is situated on the river front and has a large pub garden with many seats and patio umbrellas. The food is good and the beer is even better. On a summers day this is a very special place to spend an hour or so in the sun. If you are unfortunate enough to visit on a rainy day the interior of the pub is a fine place to eat and drink.

The patio area used to be a wharf where boats bringing in supplies for the city and University would be unloaded. The old crane has been left in situ and preserved to add character. In the days before rail and road haulage all heavy loads were transported by waterways.

The Oxford River Thames Walk
Now this is important. The bridge over the stream by the side of the River Head Public House is hard to find. It is behind the pub. There are no sign posts. Walk into the small car park at the rear of the pub and head towards the pub’s kitchen access and bins. It looks like you are in the wrong place. Keep walking around the back of the pub and you will find the bridge and the gated access point to Christ Church Meadow and the River Thames walk

You can walk up the tree-lined avenue back to the Christ Church Cathedral but my advice would be to walk along the main riverbank as far as the wooden footbridge. You may be lucky to see canoeists, tourists in punts and the oxford boat team enjoying the water. Follow the path to the left along the smaller attractive winding river Cherwell (pronounced 'Charwell'). It will take you to the University of Oxford Botanical Garden. You will pass by some cricket pitches on your right on the other side of the river. On your left the large grass area used to be used to graze cattle.

Be careful if you go for a pleasant summers evenings walk as this can lead to a frantic search for a way out of Christ Church Meadow. The gates close at 9 pm and you will be locked in. At the end of the path near the back of the Oxford University Botanical Garden there is a large ornamental gate that leads into Rose Lane. Go through the gate. At the end of the lane before you meet the main road turn right. Walk through the hedged garden of the Botanical garden to find the small wooden entrance door that leads to the ticket office.

University of Oxford Botanical Gardens
These are the oldest Botanical Gardens in England. They were established in 1621 and created by the Oxford University faculty of medicine to grow medicinal plants and herbs. There is an entrance fee to these gardens. To some visitors the gardens will be a disappointment. They are not show gardens. They are a place of learning where exotic species plants that have been collected from all over the world are displayed. The green houses are fascinating and worth the entrance fee, especially the palm houses. Where else can you show children what coffee looks like grown on a bush. The red and green berries on the same branch are an unusual sceptical. It is strange to think that the bean inside the flesh, once dried and roasted, produce a delicious drink. Some children would be more interested in seeing where chocolate comes from. There are a number of coco plants grown in the hot green houses and you can spot coco pods high up in the canopy. I was fascinated to see cotton growing as well as rice. If you look carefully you will be able to see bananas growing. Boys will be especially intrigued to view all the carnivorous insect eating plants. From a practical point there are clean public toilets near the green houses. The River Cherwell passes right besides it's grounds. The punts are tied up by the river side. You can admire punting skills of some of the tourists or even laugh when they fall in.

Boat and Oxford Punt hire
On the other side of the road from the University of Oxford Botanical Gardens, by the base of the old sandstone Magdalen Bridge, is the boat hire company. There are a number of other locations where you can hire boats but this is the largest. It can be expensive if there are only two of you but the bigger the group the cheaper the cost per person as the price is divided by how many get in the boat or punt. You can pay extra for a member of staff to punt your skiff for you and to be provided with a bottle of wine. Oxford University students can use punts for free as most colleges have their own boats.

Punting can be a hard art to master. I bet you find it harder than it looks at first. You get used to it after 10 minutes, but it is quite a strange skill. Once you get the hang of it you can move at quite a speed. Be careful as It is very easy to lose your balance especially if you have had too much, beer, wine or Pimms and lemonade. I would recommended taking a change of clothes just in case. Remember that it is traditional to punt from the flat end of the boat. Look out for the swans as they can be vicious and they will also try to steal your picnic. Punting and messing about on the river is one of my very favourite Oxford activities. There is nothing better than on a lazy summer afternoon, cruising along the river Thames or Cherwell, having a laugh with a bunch of good mates and stopping in at the various pubs getting merry en route to nowhere. Another place to hire a boat is from the Cherwell boathouse company. Follow the Banbury Road north out of Oxford, and turn into Bardwell Road on the right. The Cherwell boathouse is down a narrow lane towards the end of the road.

Oxford University Colleges
Tourists often ask where is Oxford University. It is not in one location. The University is not a campus but a collection of 36 colleges and 5 halls scattered around Oxford city centre. Many tourists never see inside the beautiful colleges due to strange opening hours and charging admission fees. One of my favourite things about these colleges is their layouts. The colleges, particularly the elder ones, are composed of one or more quads A quad typically contains a front lawn, surrounded by a mixture of student's residences, a chapel, dining hall, college offices, Junior Common Room, Senior Common Room and student bar

Look out for bikes
Many of Oxford’s residents travel around the city by bicycle. As previously mentioned Oxford is not a car friendly place as there are not many places to park Using a bicycle is the cheapest, easiest and quickest way to get from A to B, especially as bikes can go where the cars and busses cannot. It is the mode of transport for most of the Oxford University students. Some cyclists can be rather dangerous. Look out for those that ride on pavements and ignore red lights. When you cross the road, it's always a good idea to check bicycles, even if you have the right of way.

Problem Pronunciations
Oxford has some place and location names which cause problems for visitors. Magdalene Road, Magdalene Street, Magdalene College and Magdalene bridge is pronounced Maudlin. Balliol College is pronounced Bay-lee-ill. Bodleian library is pronounced Bod-lee-inn for Worcester College is pronounced Wooster. The River Cherwell is pronounced 'Charwell' and the famous mispronunciation the River Thames is pronounced Thems.

Radcliffe Camera
The Radcliffe Camera is one of Oxford's most beautiful buildings. It is used as a reading room for students at the University colleges. The word Camera means a chamber or round building. It is in the historic heart of the University and can be found in Catte Street, which links the High Street to Broad Street via Radcliffe Square. It is in one of my favourite part of Oxford. Radcliffe Square is normally busy with tourists and tour groups, so to really appreciate the atmosphere visiting in the early morning or evening. Sunday morning is a good time as most tourists get up later and the students stay in bed late after a heavy Saturday night our clubbing. The public can't go inside because of the priceless original 1st edition ancient books available and the need for total silence so the students can carry out their research in peace.

This magnificent grand circular structure was built as a science library and founded by the royal physician to William III, Dr John Radcliffe. It was built between 1737-1749. The architect was James Gibbs, who was also responsible for designing two of London's finest 18th century churches, St. Martin-in-the-Fields, and St. Mary-le-Strand. The Radcliffe Camera now serves as the main reading room of the Bodleian Library. A tunnel with a conveyor belt connects the two buildings to facilitate the transfer of books. 600,000 books are also stored in rooms beneath Radcliffe Square.

The Oxford Bridge of Sighs
This is the most photographed piece of architecture in Oxford. This bridge connects the new and old buildings of Hertford College so the students don't get wet and it saves time. It is a 1914 copy of the famous bridge in Venice called the Bridge of Sighs (Ponte di Sospiri) that linked the Doge’s palace to the prison. The prisoners were said to 'sigh' as they entered the prison. The footbridge is almost hidden away down a very quiet side street off Radcliffe Square. It’s proper name is Hertford Bridge. It crosses New College Lane. Unfortunately you can't actually use it unless you're a student of Oxford University Hertford College. St. John's College, Cambridge also has its own Bridge of Sighs.

The Bodleian Library
Broad Street, Oxford, Open Monday – Friday 9am – 5pm, Saturday 19am – 4.30pm during term time only. Entry admission is charged. The Bodleian Library, known to Oxford scholars as 'The Bod', opened in 1602 with a collection of 2000 books, assembled by Sir Thomas Bodley. It incorporated an earlier library erected by the University in the fifteenth century to house a priceless collection of more than 281 manuscripts, including several important original classical texts donated by Humfrey, Duke of Gloucester. Gradually over the years the Library has expanded in order to house the growing collection of books. Today, the Bodleian includes several off-site storage areas as well as nine other libraries in Oxford

On Radcliffe Square you will find a number of buildings that are part of the Bodeian Library; the Old Schools Quadrangle, the oldest building of the Bodeian Library. Duke Humfrey's Library above the Divinity School, the Radcliffe Camera, and the Clarendon Building. The tower that is part of the Quadrangle is called the Tower of Five Orders and is named so because on top of the tower are five ornamented columns. and each of them is one of the five orders of classical architecture, Doric, Tuscan, Ionic, Corinthian and Composite.

The Bodleian Library is one of six copyright libraries entitled to receive a free copy of any book published in Britain for reference. The others are the British Library, Cambridge University Library, the National Library of Wales, the National Library of Scotland and the Library of Trinity College Dublin. On Radcliffe Square you will find the Old Schools Quadrangle, the oldest building of the Bodeian Library. Other buildings on this square that are part of the Bodeian Library are Duke Humfrey's Library above the Divinity School, the Radcliffe Camera, and the Clarendon Building.

Bodleian Library: The Clarendon Building
Christopher Wren's pupil Nicholas Hawksmoor designed the Clarendon Building in the then new neo-classical style. It was built in 1711 - 1713 to house the Oxford University Press, which until then had its quarters in the basement of the Sheldonian Theatre. The place takes its name from the Earl of Clarendon, author of 'The History of the Great Rebellion', whose son presented the University with its copyright. The proceeds from its publication partly paid for the construction of the building. The interesting statue in the niche of the first floor on the west side is that of Edward Hyde, 1st Earl of Clarendon. The building was used successively as the university printing house, university police station and the offices of the Registrar. It is now part of the Bodleian Library.

Bodleian Library: Divinity School
The Divinity School was built in 1420-83 for lectures and discussions on theology. It is now part of the Bodleian Library. One of the treasures kept there is a chair made of the original wood from the ship of Sir Francis Drake to me when my friend and library guide showed us in. Above the Divinity School is the magnificent Duke Humfrey Library named after Henry V's brother and built in the years 1439 - 1489. Open: weekdays - 9 am.- 5 pm., Saturdays - 9 am.- 12.30pm

Oxford University Museum of Natural History, Parks Road, Oxford
Open daily 10am – 5pm. Free entry. This museum is worth visiting just to see the exhibits in its impressive grade one listed Victorian iron, brick and glass cathedral size building. Children will love the reconstructed dinosaurs and dodo exhibits. It houses collections of minerals, fossils, insects and stuffed animals.

The University of Oxford Shop
The official University of Oxford Shop can be found at 106 High Street. It is not open on Sunday. Many other shops around the city sell Oxford University ‘T ‘ shirts, sweat shirts and hoodies.

University Museum of the history of Science, Broad Street, Oxford
Open Tuesday – Friday 12pm – 5pm, Saturday 10am – 5pm, Sunday 2pm – 5pm. Free entry. The history of Science Museum is small. It contains interesting old historic scientific instrument used in astronomy, mathematics, science and photography. There is a section includes Einstein's writing and equations on a Blackboard. There are collections of astrolabes, sundials, quadrants, early mathematical instruments generally(including those used for surveying, drawing, calculating, astronomy and navigation. Optical instruments including telescopes, microscopes and cameras, together with objects associated with chemistry, natural philosophy and medicine are displayed. The Museum possesses a unique reference library for the study of the history of scientific instruments. You are required to carry your backpack or bag at the front of your body or at your side so you'd have less chances to hit anything in the museum by accident.

Open Monday – Friday 2pm – 5pm, Saturday 10am – 12noon during term time only. Free entry.

Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology, Beaumont Street, Oxford.
Open Tuesday – Saturday 10am – 5pm, Sunday 12pm – 5pm. Free entry. The Ashmolean is a museum of the University of Oxford and is one of the oldest public museums in the world being established in 1683. It houses rare and priceless examples of art and antiquities including archaeology exhibits, Greek sculptures, mummies, Japanese and Chinese art, bronzes, ceramics, pottery and ancient coins. The Museum Shop is one of the best souvenir shops in Oxford and it has a good cafe. Look out for the Viking silver display and the Anglo-Saxon treasures that includes the stunning "Alfred Jewel" belonging to King Alfred the Great (871-899 AD).

The Oxford Canal
Before the days of motorways and trains all the heavy commercial loads were transported into and out of Oxford in canal boats on the Oxford Canal. To escape the noise and traffic of Oxford, try walking the canal path. You can get to it form town at the Hythe Street Bridge, or from Jericho near St. Barnabas Church
