A2 Antrim Coast Road
Although the A2 is a major road it is mostly a single carriageway. It was designed and built by Charles Lanyon, an architect and engineer, in the mid-19th. century following the devastation caused by the Irish potato famine. Many Irish people living in the remote Glens of Antrim died of hunger. The A2 road was needed to make the Glens more accessible. Thanks to Lanyon's skill as a designer it has also become one of the most beautiful scenic drives in the British Isles. Because of the recent religious and political 'troubles' there has not been much costal development. The area is in a time warp from the 1950's. The Mountains come down to the coast. Some stretches of the road are breath taking. Keep stopping along the coast road and enjoy the scenery. Northern Ireland's weather is mild and often wet. If you have a dry sunny day you are very lucky. Be prepared for rain. If it is wet still get out of your car and explore the coast. Pop into a tea room or a country pub to dry off around a roaring wood fire. |
