World War Two - Roll of Honour

Arthur Moore = Army No: 984130 Rank Private. He was a 'gunner' in the Royal Artillery. He enlisted 16th May 1940. It is believed that after training he was posted to Northern Ireland and then sent to France after D-Day to assist in the liberation of France, Belgium and Holland followed by the invasion of Germany. His army record book shows that he was posted to the South Wales Battalion 6/03/1945 till 13/04/1945. This would have been the South Wales Boarders. Why he changed regiments is not known at present. It may be that they had artillery and anti tank guns attached to the regiment and needed trained crew to man them. The regiment had been in the thick of fighting and lost a lot of soldiers. He did not stay with them long as he was transferred yet again. This time to the Northamptonshire Regiment 4th Battalion. He served there from 14th/04/1945 till 20/04/1946. He arrived just a month before the Germans surrendered on 8th May 1945. Arthur passed away in South Africa aged 81. CLICK HERE TO READ MORE INFORMATION AND TO SEE MORE PHOTOS
Len Moore = He joined the British Army Kings Royal Rifle Corps Mechanized Infantry Regiment. He then went to fight in Italy where he was sent home ill with Cancer. He was given 6 months to live but died 10 years later. In the desert Len used to keep a pet chameleon on his shoulder to help keep the flies away. Its long tongue would zap them out of the sky if they came near.  He died back in England aged 37. Cyril Moore = Cyril was the only brother who had joined the armed services before the outbreak of World War Two. He was a regular and joined a RAF Barrage Balloon unit in Cornwall then moved to London to help protect it from the German Blitz. He volunteered to join Bomber Command as Air Crew and was trained as a gunner. He was posted as a Rear Gunner in a Vickers Wellington Bomber. Due to heavy looses on daylight raids, the Wellington became a night bomber and from 1940 was also used as a long range bomber in North Africa. Cyril's Squadron was posted to North Africa. He was one of the few Rear Gunners to survive two tours of duty. The rear gunner was normally the first to die as the German fighters attacked their position first. Once the rear gunner was put out of action they could shoot the bomber down without fear of being shot down.  Cyril Moore completed 48 combat bombing missions as a rear Gunner in Wellington Bombers but had flown two additional bombing missions where his pilot had to turn back. He had taken off and faced going into battle 50 times.  Air crew wanted to fly in Cyril Moore's plane as he seemed to be lucky and always come back safe. Cyril could not stand  Street after the war. He rejoined the RAF and became an instructor.
