York buildings Wendover1841
The first English census started in 1841. For the first time the family address is recorded as York Buildings, Wendover. Tragedy has hit the family. The head of the household John Moore has died between 1834 and 1840. Martha who is now 45 is on her own with her children. Her occupation is shown as a Lace worker. She is sharing her home with an elderly 70 year old lady called Mary Lampton who is also a Lace worker. She now only has three children staying with her. Steven aged 13 and two new children, Daniel aged 9 and George aged 6. George Moore was born in 1835 and baptized on 19th July 1835 so her husband John Moore must still have been alive in 1834. He would have only been 44 years old. Missing from the census are Jane Moore who would have been 29 and married, Abel Moore aged 21, Thomas aged 19 and Mary aged 14. The first three would have left home but Mary may have died or was working as a servant.

St Mary's Church Wendover in winterJoel Moore is important to our story as he is a direct descendant of the London Moore’s. He married Lucy Beckley on 30th October 1837 in St Marys Church. Wendover. This was the same year that the 18 year old Victoria was crowned Queen of the United Kingdom and the British Empire. Joel and Lucy had a child the following year called James who was baptized 5th August 1838 in St Marys church, Wendover. They have moved out of the family home in Edinburgh Buildings. The location of Joel and Lucy’s new home was not recorded but in 1840 they had a baby girl called Mary. She was born in Lambeth, London.Wendover Chilten chalk down countryside
